Laubscher v. Gwinnett County

No. 25-10323 (11th Cir.)

In short

Gwinnett County is one of the most populous counties in Georgia. It gets thousands of 911 calls from people in mental-health crises every year. And it gives its police officers zero hours of crisis-intervention training. It just sends them—armed and trained to stop criminals—to mental-health crisis calls and hopes for the best. In this case, one of those officers killed our clients’ child, who was experiencing a suicidal crisis. We’ve asked the Eleventh Circuit to hold that by using armed, untrained police officers as its de facto mental-health first responders, Gwinnett County discriminated against people with mental illness in violation of the ADA.
